GitHub Highlights aims to be usable by everyone, including people with disabilities. The site is built to WCAG 2.1 level AA.
What the accessibility menu offers
The button in the corner of the screen opens a menu with six controls: text size up and down across four steps, high contrast, underlined links, wider line and letter spacing, and stopping animations and transitions. Your choice is stored in the browser and carries to the next page.
What is done beyond the menu
The whole site can be navigated by keyboard alone, every page starts with a skip link to the main content, and focus is clearly marked. Headings follow a real hierarchy, decorative illustrations are hidden from screen readers, and form fields are labelled. Code blocks are selectable text, not images.
The site honours the operating system's reduce-motion setting without touching the menu. It has been checked with keyboard-only navigation and at 200% zoom.
Known limitations
Posts carry a lot of identifiers — repository names, commands, flags — that a screen reader pronounces as words. Command examples are shown as written, so punctuation-heavy lines can be tedious to hear.
Posts are drafted with a language model. They are reviewed before publishing, but phrasing quality can vary between posts.
